Louisville, CO – April 25, 2025 – onWater Fish, the leading mobile app for anglers, is proud to announce the release of its newest in-app feature: the California Trout Project Locator Map Layer. Created in collaboration with California Trout (CalTrout), this custom mapping tool connects anglers directly to active conservation projects across the state—from steelhead habitat restoration on the North Coas tto restoring degraded mountain meadows in the Sierra Nevada to barrier removal projects across the state.
The CalTrout Project Locator is a digital resource that brings visibility to more than 60 ongoing and completed projects led by CalTrout and their partners. This new map layer—free to access in the onWater app—provides anglers with a mobile-friendly way to discover and engage with conservation work happening on the waters they fish.
Once enabled, users can explore California’s waterways and view project points of interest (POIs) marked with the CalTrout logo. Tapping a project icon reveals a short summary and a direct link to CalTrout’s website, where users can learn more, volunteer, or support financially.
This tool offers CalTrout’s community a new mobile platform for accessing project information while introducing onWater users to CalTrout’s mission and conservation impact.
“Conservation and angling go hand in hand,” said Alex Maier, CMO of onWater. “With the CalTrout Project Locator, we’re giving anglers a powerful tool to deepen their connection to the rivers they fish—and to take action as stewards of those waters.”
Whether you’re casting downstream of a restoration site or curious about your local watershed, the Project Locator transforms interest into informed action. From the North Coast to the Sierra, and even watersheds in urban Southern California, each map pin tells the story of conservation in progress—and why it matters.
“We’re excited to partner with onWater to showcase the breadth and impact of our work,” said Curtis Knight, Executive Director of California Trout. “This tool highlights how science, collaboration, and community come together to support California’s fish and waterways.”
This feature follows the recent launch of onWater’s Science on the Fly Conservation Observation Tool, a collaboration with Science on the Fly to streamline community science efforts. Together, these tools underscore onWater’s continued investment in merging technology with conservation engagement.
By bringing visibility to research and restoration directly in-app, onWater empowers anglers to understand their role in protecting freshwater ecosystems—whether by joining a river clean-up, advocating for policy, or fishing more mindfully.
California Trout is a statewide nonprofit organization with a mission to revitalize waters for resilient wild fish and a better California. For more than 50 years, CalTrout has worked to protect and restore the state’s unique aquatic ecosystems through science, advocacy, restoration, and community engagement.
onWater Fish is the #1 mobile app designed to help anglers explore, plan, and fish smarter—while championing responsible recreation and conservation. The app offers interactive maps, species layers, offline tools, and access features that empower users to better understand and care for the waters they fish
